HOW THE SPINE WEARS DOWN

By: Dr. Donna A. Pontoriero, Chiropractor

Like any other body part, the spine is subject to the stress put on it by the activities of daily life and can wear down. Particularly susceptible to injury are the discs that cushion the individual vertebrae that make up the spine, and through which the spinal cord passes. The discs have a tough exterior and a gelatinous interior. They can rupture and they can slip out of position. This will cause discomfort not only in the back but in the body part controlled by the nerves that emanate from the damaged part of the spine.

Even if your spine has never endured the trauma of a fall or a car accident, the normal process of aging takes its toll on the spine. And stress, whether it's brought on by physical, emotional or chemical factors, can also affect the spine and compound back pain.

Regular visits to your chiropractor and periodic spinal adjustments to keep the vertebrae in line can mitigate the effects of aging. Chiropractic treatment has also been shown to be effective in easing the effects of stress. Just as yoy regularly visit other health-care providers, so too should you see your chiropractor.
